One Room Challenge Week 4

We have finally started some projects that will lead to some big changes in our kitchen. The first thing was building a kitchen island. I’m pretty terrible at describing step by step so I’ll let the pictures do the talking of our process.

We started by building the top out of 2x4s.

Next added the legs.

We added extra braces for support and to make it very sturdy.

Then the whole thing was clad in plyboard.

And then clad again in cement Hardie Board because mortar will not stick to wood.

Then it was time to start laying the mortar and tiles. I chose this grid mosaic tile from The Tile Shop.

And finally the grout.

Hot tip from a newbie who had to learn the hard way: mix up your grout in small amounts and work in small areas. Make sure the grout is smooth like cake mix and wipe it off as you go. It dries VERY quick!

I’d love to show you the final result but that will have to wait for the big reveal.

Until then go and check out the other 19 designers participating!
